Blood sugar regulation is extremely important for our overall health. You are not going to feel any different at the beginning of the disease. So it’s important to do regular doctor’s visits to know what your blood glucose levels are. Especially if you have a family member with diabetes or if you are overweight. Why bother if you don’t feel anything? Because when blood sugar is elevated even slightly, it starts sticking to the tissues inside your body and interfering with their functioning. That accelerates aging and increases the risk of heart disease. High blood sugar can damage your sight and peripheral nerves. It’s also strongly associated with degenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s. And the list goes on…
According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report from 2017, there were 30.3 million Americans with diabetes in 2012, and 84.5 millions with pre-diabetes. In addition, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention predicts that, if we do not change course, 1 in 3 Americans will have diabetes by 2050. Neither statistics nor predictions for blood sugar regulation of American people are very cheerful.
